The day started out a bit on the chilly side with grey, overcast skies – typical of our North Bay weather in July. We departed Shari’s at 9:30 AM with 15 bikes & 17 riders and headed north on 101 to Healdsburg. We then exited the dread freeway on to Dry Creek Rd then up Dutcher Creek Rd into South Cloverdale where we stopped for an early morning coffee elimination break before heading over to Boonville via CA-128. We then took CA-253 into Ukiah then a hop back on to 101 up to Calpella for lunch at Club Calpella. Hwy’s 128 & 253 were just a dream; lots of easy twisties, not much traffic and a shining sun warming up the day.
Club Calpella served up some great food which was accompanied by attentive service and of course, great company. With our bellies full and thirsts quenched, we headed south down 101 and exited on CA-222 to Talmage where we picked up Old River Rd for a leisurely back-road ride down to Hopland. We jumped back on 101 to our final stop in South Cloverdale again where we said our good-byes and went our separate ways home. I was home by 3:30 and added 198 miles to my odometer for the day – round trip from Monte Rio.
Thanks to Michael Turpin and Gretchen Tomm for sweep duties and most of all, thanks to my fellow club members for making my virgin ride as an RRMC Road Captain a success – I managed to not get lost and not exceed the speed limit… too much! It was a pleasant, laid-back ride over some beautiful roads – can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday! Looking forward to my next adventure in cat herding – thankfully, everyone was well-behaved today.
